01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Made with plenty of egg and milk, the French toast is served with maple syrup to pour over while it is warm. It makes a satisfying choice for breakfast or brunch, and the menu recommends pairing it with coffee. One diner who visited for brunch also mentioned enjoying French toast and coffee.
For something lighter, try honey toast—a thick-cut slice of 4 cm toast with butter—or an an-butter toast topped with sweet red bean paste. The honey is identified as “Monnaka honey”, while the bean paste comes from “Kanmidokoro Irie”; the two offer different kinds of sweetness. For a more substantial option, there is a BLT with grilled bacon, lettuce and tomato in ciabatta, or a tuna melt with cheddar. A mini tuna melt is available when you want just a little more to eat. One diner who ordered it with an iced coffee in the morning found it just right for a light meal.
Alongside the café latte, which has been described as having a noticeable milky sweetness, consider the Monnaka Latte, named for the shop. The menu description says it uses a blend centred on beans from Yunnan and Colombia. With milk, its flavour shifts from something like jasmine milk tea to a sweetness reminiscent of fruit au lait. Other choices include a matcha latte made with Uji matcha and a sugar-free, caffeine-free herbal tea blending chamomile and apple.
For a sweet finish, options include a brûlée doughnut, described as crisp outside and chewy within, and a house-made cream puff filled with cream after you order. Some customers come for coffee and something sweet; the menu also makes it easy to put together anything from a drink and a small bite to a more substantial sandwich. Monnaka Coffee in Monzen-Nakacho has a spacious café area on the 2 floor as well as terrace seating, and is described as suitable for solo dining or working on a computer.
